Cat Delivering a Love Letter, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Amusing scene from the "Tale of Genji" of a cat delivering a love letter to the young prince Kashiwagi holding a football on his lap. The youth looks down dreamily at the unusual messenger as he sits beside a lacquer chest open to reveal stacks of books and scrolls. Kashiwagi was playing kickball in the palace courtyard one day when the Third Princess's cat wandered out onto the verandah, and he caught a glimpse of the beautiful maiden, falling instantly in love. At left, Genji watches with a grin as he stands on the porch, while a matron leans over the open window beside him. A blossoming cherry tree fills the garden. The first time we've seen this charming design.
