Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Ichi-no-Tani Futaba Gunki," a drama about the battle between the Genji and the Heike Clans at Ichi-no-Tani. The Genji general Kumagai Jiro Naozane returns to his camp to find his wife waiting for him. Kumagai has just sacrificed their son Kojiro to atone for killing the emperor's illegitimate son, Atsumori, whom he had captured in battle, and can't bring himself to tell his wife, Sagami, the truth. He scowls at her angrily, waving his fan above his head as she looks up with a worried, pleading expression, wanting to know what happened. At right, Yoshitsune suspiciously eyes Kumagai, a tight-lipped frown on his face. He wears a white vest bordered with splashing waves over a red and yellow print kimono tucked into green stripes pants, over a suit of armor. From left, the actors are Otani Tomoemon V, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Sawamura Tossho II. Nice large, expressive figures.
