Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
A Contest of Figures in Edo Purple, No. 12, 1857

Comments - Handsome scene of Prince Genji enjoying the company of a young beauty. The nobleman reclines on a cushion at left, one arm resting on a go board while the beauty smiles shyly as a kneeling matron shows her a book with a woodblock print illustration. At right, a girl carries in an elegant black lacquer container tied with a cord. The room opens onto a garden with blossoming cherry trees framing a pond. An attractive design, nicely detailed with embossing on the white areas of Genji's kimono.
