Comments - Terrific triptych depicting Lord Yoritomo paying a visit to Hachiman Shrine. The original shrine was founded by his ancestor, Minamoto Yoriyoshi, and dedicated to Hachiman, the Shinto god of war and patron of the Minamoto Clan. Yoritomo later had the shrine enlarged and moved. The Emperor sits on a platform in an interior room at left, his face concealed by a partially lowered reed blind. Lord Yoritomo kneels in the center facing an offering tray holding a cup of sake, a young boy across from him holding a ceremonial sake warmer. Noblemen dressed in black court robes and caps kneel around the perimeter of the room, with retainers in colorful kimono bowing along the right edge of the verandah. An interesting historic subject with wonderful architectural detail in the setting.
