Series; A Selection of Famous Modern Japanese Prints
A Selection of Famous Modern Japanese Prints - In the early 20th century, in conjunction with the interest in the West, contemporary Japanese artists began to design works of art that were distinctly Japanese but reflected a consideration of a Western esthetic. The leaders in this new modern movement included Fukuda Heihachiro, Tikuoka Shinsen, Tomioka Tessai, Uemura Shoen, and Yokoyama Taikan. The works of these modern masters influenced painters and woodblock print artists over the following decades.
In the early 1960s, the Tanseisha publishing house produced a limited edition set of woodblocks titled "A Selection of Famous Modern Japanese Prints," recreating designs by these influential artists. These beautiful, large format prints are rendered with exceptional attention to detail, capturing the nuances of calligraphic brushwork and lovely gradations of color. Each print was released in a limited edition, with numbers of impressions varying from 90 to 120 per design. Images from this series are rarely seen outside
Mt. Horai - Terrific view of the snow-capped peak of Mt. Horai rising above the clouds in the distance in the early morning. The sky shimmers with metallic gold, which is also reflected on a drifting cloud at lower right. A village is perched on rocky cliffs overlooking the sea, with tall pine trees rendered in bold calligraphic line work. Mt. Horai refers to a mythical mountain from Chinese legend where immortals live, known in Chinese as Mt. Penglai. A stunning design that would make a fantastic framed display.
