Black Thrush and Winter Cherry

Series; Forty-eight Hawks Drawn from Life

Forty-eight Hawks Drawn from Life - Terrific design from Nakayama Sugakudo's most well-known series, "Forty-eight Hawks Drawn from Life," first published in 1859. A student of Hiroshige, Sugakudo was known for his high quality kacho-e, prints of birds and flowers. This lovely series depicts many varieties of birds in their natural habitats, not just hawks as in the series title, carefully observed and drawn with fine detail and attractive color. A few designs include embossing on the feathers, a deluxe printing technique. These handsome images are from a Meiji era edition, with titles in English and Japanese added below the design. A wonderful choice to collect or display.
