Series; A Brief History of Japan in Pictures

Kajiwara Genta Kagesue, 1879 - Fantastic scene of the Minamoto general Kajiwara Genta Kagesue battling an enemy beneath a blossoming plum tree. At right, he grips his sword with both hands as he strikes the handle of his foe's naginata, sending his attacker tumbling through the air with arms and legs flailing, a helmet flying off at lower right. Pink petals shower down over the combatants. A lively image with wonderful detail in the armor and weapons, including accents of burnishing.
