Child Emperor Antoku in Taikoki, 1876

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring the child Emperor Antoku in the play "Taikoki," who sits perched upon the shoulder of Hashiba Hideyoshi at upper right. In the center, the elderly warrior Shibata Katsuie confronts Hideyoshi, looking up with an angry frown as he stares at the boy, a fan in one hand and his other gripping the scabbard of his sword. Hideyoshi glares back at him, wearing a black robe and court cap. Just below, the samurai Maeda Toshiie grits his teeth angrily, while another warrior watches at left. The large colorful characters are set off by the deep red sky. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Ichikawa Danjuro, Bando Hikosaburo, Sawamura Genpei as the boy, and Sawamura Tossho. Nice expressive figures.
