Peony Blooming in the Snow in the First Month

Series; Twelve-layer Kimono (Junihitoe), 1897

Twelve-layer Kimono - Charming design from Chikanobu's 1897 series "Twelve-layer Kimono" (Junihitoe), which depicts upper-class ladies enjoying seasonal activities in each of the twelve months of the year. The title "junihitoe" refers to a style of formal kimono worn at court by women during the Heian era, which consisted of many layers of robes, used here as an allusion to the twelve months of the year. From admiring plum blossoms and viewing autumn maples to watching descending geese, these charming designs are beautifully detailed and printed, with deluxe treatments such as embossing, burnishing, and fine bokashi shading. A rarely seen series.

Special detail - Embossing on the white kimono collar and trim, burnishing on the black kimono.

Image Size - 8 1/2" x 13 1/4" + margins as shown
