Okabe Rokuyata and the Courtesan Tadataka, 1885 - Handsome kabuki scene of the nobleman Okabe Rokuyata angrily waving a flowering cherry branch at the elegant courtesan Tadataka. Rokuyata watches her out of the corners of his eyes with a tight-lipped frown, dressed in a blue patterned kamishimo over a navy brocade kimono, a black court cap tied under his chin. The beauty regards him with a calm smile, wearing a lovely tied-dyed red kimono trimmed with a purple floral print, her long hair flowing loosely over her shoulders. Rokuyata's wife Fukaya watches anxiously at right, while below her, Gohei seems agitated, clutching at his chest. Outside, pink petals from fall a cherry tree in bloom against a deep red sky. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo III, Nakamura Fukusuke IV, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Bando Shucho II. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair, lively color, and burnishing in the court cap and black lacquer verandah railing.
