Comments - Great portrait from the play the play Sato no Haru, Azami no Ironui" of Onoe Kikugoro V as Oniazami Seikichi, formerly the priest Seishin, who was banished after his affair with the geisha Izayoi was discovered. The couple decided to commit lovers' suicide together by jumping into a river, but neither drowned, and they went their separate ways. Seishin then became a bandit, taking the name Seikichi with the nickname Oniazami or Demon Thistle. Here, he clings to a wooden piling in the water after his failed suicide attempt, grimacing angrily as a boat approaches to rescue him. He wears a white kimono with an embossed geometric pattern tied with a purple obi, his wet hair clinging to his face. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft shading on the night sky.
