Comments - Fantastic scene from the Battle of Fujikawa showing Minamoto troops along the shore of the Fujikawa River. According to legend, the Minamoto and Taira armies camped alongside the Fujikawa on the night before the battle. The birds along the river made such a commotion that the Taira troops fled, fearing a surprise attack by a much larger force. Yoritomo is shown seated at far right on a folding stool, surrounded by his retainers. A large bonfire burns in the center, smoke rising into the night sky as hundreds of wild geese take to the air, the men below pointing and gesturing at the sight. Tasseled standards and banners wave in the air, and across the mist-shrouded water, a row of Taira banners can be seen along the horizon. A terrific depiction of this famous event, nicely detailed.
