Scene from Kanete Kiku Oie no Bakemono, 1838

Comments - Intriguing scene from the kabuki play "Kanete Kiku Oie no Bakemono" at the Nakamura Theater of a couple in an interior. At right, Ukiyo Tohira stares at a cut off ponytail that seems to have come to life, menacing him like a snake as it rises up into the air. He thrusts a fan decorated with a large toad at it, frowning angrily. At left, the beauty Kasane watches him with an alarmed expression as she dabs a makeup brush on her palm. She kneels beside a mirror on a stand, a packet of makeup on the floor nearby. A kimono bordered with maple leaves and a flowing stream is draped over a folding screen behind the pair. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro III and Bando Hikosaburo IV. A fascinating subject. Includes an allover dusting of mica on the right panel.
