Series; Portraits of the False Murasaki's Genji

Suma, 1860 - Intriguing image of Mitsuuji, the hero of the novel "A False Murasaki's Country Genji," a parody of the famous "Tale of Genji." The series illustrates the adventures of Mitsuuji, the Country or Rustic Genji, and his encounters with the upper class. Here, he dozes while leaning against a lacquer armrest, a heavy kimono draped over his shoulder. His dream appears in a wisp rising from his chest and depicting a woman kneeling in a room overlooking the ocean at upper right, a ship in the distance and a blossoming cherry tree framing the view. Lovely detail in the setting and fabrics, including an embossed geometric pattern on Mitsuuji's white robe. The first time we've seen this design.
