Returning Sails at Takanawa, 1865 - Handsome triptych depicting Prince Genji returning to Takanawa, standing beside a palanquin at right. He grins as he looks up from reading a long letter, the paper trailing over the top of the palanquin. In the center, a beauty carries his sword wrapped in purple silk, and a young girl holds a lacquer box, watching him with a puzzled expression, her sleeve to her chin. Two other women arrive at left, tottering along on tall wooden geta clogs. A few ships are anchored in the harbor, and sails can be seen in the distance. A charming design, beautifully colored and detailed, with embossing on the white kimono trim and the letter, and bokashi shading on the water and sky.
