Iwai Hanshiro as the Nun Seigen

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Iwai Hanshiro as the nun Seigen, formerly the Princess Hakano. The princess became a nun after learning that her fiance, Matsuwakamaru, had died. When her sister, Princess Sakura, becomes engaged to a man who looks just like her fiance (and in fact, is), Seigen goes insane. Here, she looks up with an alarmed expression as she watches dragonflies flitting through the air above a blossoming bush clover. A low lacquer table at right holds several scrolls. An expressive figure in an attractive setting.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 10 1/4"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Partially backed with paper. C-shaped tear, small loss, repaired. Creasing. Please see photos for details.
