Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Jitsumu Shonin Jiraiya, 1852

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Jitsumu Shonin Jiraiya in the play " Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari." A folk hero and thief who practiced toad magic, Jiraiya is shown standing beneath a tall tree with a compass in hand, looking up over his shoulder as stars twinkle in the night sky. He wears a black outer coat with large stylized floral motifs and splashing waves on the collar over a brown kimono and a suit of armor. A terrific design, nicely composed and detailed, with fine bokashi shading in the sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/4"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Partially backed with paper. A couple creases. Please see photos for details.
