Comments - Beautiful scene from the famous "Tale of Genji" of Prince Genji enjoying a rainy night with a group of beauties. He stands at right, smiling as he pulls the collar of his coat over his shoulder, a slender pipe extending from his kimono sleeve. Three women are gathered around a hibachi, one reading from a long letter as another tends a teakettle. At left, a beauty kneels next to a red lacquer table laden with food, using chopsticks to eat from a blue and white porcelain bowl. A young attendant at far left carries a letter in her hand, looking back over her shoulder. Her blue kimono is patterned with large pink peony blossoms above yellow splashing waves, the design matching the robe draped over an elegant black lacquer stand behind her. Fantastic detail in the interior setting and furnishings. A charming and colorful triptych.
