A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction
Tales of the Floating World on Eastern Brocade - Dating from 1867 - 1868, this terrific early series by Yoshitoshi illustrates famous tales by a variety of storytellers. The stories are retold by Kanagaki Robun in text blocks that take the form of a book with the pages bent back. Yoshitoshi depicts the violence and drama of these popular narratives with wonderful realism and his characteristic attention to detail. Images from this early series are rarely seen on the market and are great choice for a Yoshitoshi enthusiast or a collector interested in Japanese folklore and legends.
Uesugi Kanenobu on Horseback, 1868 - Great depiction of the samurai Uesugi Kanenobu on a dappled horse, looking out across the scene as smoke billows up into the night sky. He wears a green vest patterned with clouds of a suit of armor, a monk's cowl draped over his helmet topped with a one-horned demon, one hand flung out at his side. A couple of retainers ride along in the distance at lower left, holding their swords upright. Just beyond them, the heads of massed troops and a waving red flag can be seen below the smoke. A striking design with soft shading on the sky and smoke.
