Tales of the Floating World on Eastern Brocade - Dating from 1867 - 1868, this terrific early series by Yoshitoshi illustrates famous tales by a variety of storytellers. The stories are retold by Kanagaki Robun in text blocks that take the form of a book with the pages bent back. Yoshitoshi depicts the violence and drama of these popular narratives with wonderful realism and his characteristic attention to detail. Images from this early series are rarely seen on the market and are great choice for a Yoshitoshi enthusiast or a collector interested in Japanese folklore and legends.
Kimura Matazo Holding a Spear, 1868 - Terrific portrait of the samurai Kimura Matazo standing on a hillside, looking down with a defiant expression as troops approach in the distance and gray smoke billows up into the night sky. He grips a spear in one hand, wearing armor over an orange print robe, a white cloth tied over his shoulders and under his arms. A handsome design, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair.
