Tales of the Floating World on Eastern Brocade - Dating from 1867 - 1868, this terrific early series by Yoshitoshi illustrates famous tales by a variety of storytellers. The stories are retold by Kanagaki Robun in text blocks that take the form of a book with the pages bent back. Yoshitoshi depicts the violence and drama of these popular narratives with wonderful realism and his characteristic attention to detail. Images from this early series are rarely seen on the market and are great choice for a Yoshitoshi enthusiast or a collector interested in Japanese folklore and legends.
Nikki Danjo Naonori Attempting an Assassination, 1866 - Fantastic scene of the evil magician Nikki Danjo Naonori attempting to assassinate an opponent in his quest to become heir to the succession of the Date Clan. He clenches a knife in his raised hand as his intended victim grabs him around the back, staring ahead with a determined expression, biting his lower lip. An overturned lacquer table and falling screen are evidence of the struggle. A terrific design from this famous kabuki tale, beautifully detailed with a burnished stylized wave pattern on the black kimono.
