A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction
May 17, Earth and Water - Unusual image featuring Fukurokuju, one of Japan's famous Seven Lucky Gods along with a demon and other figures. The deity sits a left, easily recognizable by his tall forehead, indicating wisdom. At lower right, Fukusuke, a boy figure with a large head who is considered lucky, appears to have his lips pinned shut with a straw. Just above him, a gray demon with curly hair scratches his head as he shouts, flames rising behind him. Two grinning women complete the scene, the one at top holding what may be a puffer fish. The text at upper left is a series of non-consecutive numbers. The date seal for the print appears to be Monkey 4, which would correspond to 1860, but it is not clear so we are not sure of the date, and we have been unable to identify the subject.
