Three Street Knights, 1866

Comments - Great kabuki scene of three otokodate or street knights on an evening stroll, each wearing a blue and white summer kimono with a bold pattern. At left, Benten Kozo Kikunosuke's robe features a lion and peony blossoms, while in the center, the kimono of Ushikawa Kozo Denji has a fierce dragon on it. At right, Tengu Kozo Kiritaro wears a robe patterned with the takaramono or precious things, auspicious objects such as a wish-fulfilling jewel and a straw raincoat that allows the wearer to fly. The rooftops of the city appear in dark silhouette beneath the night sky. The first time we've seen this interesting design.
