Threatening a Child, 1865

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of a man threatening a young boy with his sword. He grips the child's kimono as he places the blade alongside his neck, the boy struggling to free himself. The horrified mother rushes forward at right, her hands thrown out in alarm. A samurai sits before her holding his sword upright, frowning as he watches but making no move to intervene. At left, commoner in a checked kimono eavesdrops outside the door, grinning to himself. Casks of sake are stacked inside the room at left, while curtains hang in the doorway and a household shrine can be seen behind the beauty. An interesting subject with a nicely detailed setting.
