Comments - Terrific scene of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's ship encountering severe winds at Daimotsu Bay. Following the defeat of the Taira by the Minamoto at the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura, Taira no Tomomori committed suicide by tying himself to an anchor and leaping overboard, followed by many of his men. As Yoshitsune's boat sailed into Daimotsu Bay, the ghosts of Tomomori and his retainers created an enormous storm to swamp his enemy's boat. A huge bold of lightning flashes across the sky as rain slants down and wind churns up frothing waves. At the side of the ship, the loyal warrior monk Benkei looks up at the black sky, gripping a naginata and clutching his prayer beads as he prays to the gods to vanquish the storm and save the vessel. A great, dramatic composition with wonderful detail in the armor and fine bokashi shading in the sky.
