Sanuki, Moon over Kotohiki Shrine, Princess Shiranui and Butoda, No. 22 - Lovely design of a beauty playing the koto on the verandah of the Hachiman Shrine at Kotohikiyama (Zither Strumming Hill). According to legend, the Shinto deity Hachiman appeared here in 703, accompanied by the music of a koto. The shrine overlooks a beautiful view of the bay below, a full moon shrouded by misty clouds overhead and a rugged pine tree framing the scene. The inset at upper left shows Princess Shiranui, the wife of Minamoto no Tametomo, holding a sword, ready to attack and kill the warrior Butoda, who betrayed her husband. An atmospheric scene with beautiful shading on the sky and water.
