Kyoto, Moon over the Imperial Palace, Minister of the Left Yorinaga, Lady Ayame and Third Court Rank Minamoto no Yorimasa, No. 9 - Fantastic scene depicting the hero Minamoto no Yorimasa kneeling to receive a gift of a sword from the Minister of the Left Yorinaga. A talented archer, Yorimasa was able to shoot down and kill the nue, a beast that had been attacking the Imperial Palace and plaguing the Emperor, with a single arrow. He looks up at the full moon in the sky above as the minister approaches with the gift on an offering tray while Lady Ayame watches from the verandah. The inset at upper left depicts the nue, a mythical creature with a tiger's body, a monkey's head, and the tail of a snake, amid a flash of jagged lightening. A terrific image from this classic tale, with a subtle burnished pattern on the minister's black robe, and burnishing on the court caps.
