Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke I as Hamanari and Bando Takesaburo I as Takenari, two fishermen who pulled a golden statue of the Goddess Kannon from the Miyato River. A shrine was built to house the statue in Asakusa, and after the fishermen died, they were also enshrined, with all three celebrated during the Sanja Matsuri festival. Here, the fishermen look up as a mystical cloud swirls overhead, bearing the kanji symbols for good and evil. Each wears a rust colored shirt and grips an oar, the fellow at left frowning anxiously as he watches the cloud. Nicely composed and detailed with delicate cloth embossing on the towels tied around their necks, and fine bokashi shading in the sky.
