Pulling a Rogue out of a Well, circa 1842

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych depicting a rogue being pulled out of a well. He grips the chain with both hands, a sword clenched between his teeth, glaring furiously at the samurai pulling him up. He wears a straw raincoat over his armor, his hair pulled back into a thick ponytail beneath a halo of short hair atop his head. The samurai at left watches him out of the corners of his eyes with a worried frown, one foot resting atop the bucket. At right, a commoner leans forward aggressively, grimacing with his hands folded behind his back, a bamboo broom tucked under his obi. The well is surrounded with autumn grasses, with a weathered signpost at right. From left, the actors are Bando Mitsugoro IV, Onoe Kikugoro III, and Kataoka Ichizo I. A great image with wonderfully expressive figures and handsome detail.
