Ueno Kiyomizu, 1940 by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949)

Original Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ueno Kiyomizu, 1940

Tsuchiya Koitsu - After moving to Tokyo at age fifteen, Koitsu studied for many years with the woodblock artist Kobayashi Kiyochika. Known for his beautiful landscape prints with a dramatic use of light and shade, Koitsu was one of the leaders of the shin-hanga or new print movement in 20th century Japan.

Comments - Lovely evening scene of a beauty walking towards a teashop at Kiyomizu Temple in Ueno. Steam spills from a kettle on a brazier, and teacups are neatly stacked on the shelves below. Colorful lanterns hang overhead, and a warm yellow light spills out across the grounds, edging the trees and leaves with a golden glow. A wonderful night view and a classic Koitsu subject. Beautifully shaded. Would make a fine display.
