Courtier Fujiwara no Narimichi, No. 2 - Charming scene of the 12th century Fujiwara clan nobleman Narimichi. Famed for his skills at kickball (kemari), he practiced daily under a tree that was home to three monkeys. After his 1000th game, the courtier gave the ball to a Shinto shrine. Afterwards, the three monkeys appeared with the ball, telling him they were guardians of the game and promising to help him improve his skills. Here, Narimichi kicks a ball high in the air, much to the delight of the young child and beauty watching him. The inset above shows the three guardian monkeys dressed in robes. A great image from this wonderful story with terrific detail, including embossing on the courtier's white collar and burnishing on his black court cap.
