The 47 Ronin, Act 7: The Ichiriki Teahouse in Gion, 1859 - Handsome scene from Act 7 of the "Kandehon Chushingura," the drama based on the true story of the 47 ronin. The leader of the ronin, Oboshi Yuranosuke, has been pretending to lead a dissolute life to allay suspicions that he might be planning to avenge his master's death. At the Ichiriki Teahouse in Gion, he discovers the courtesan Okaru spying on him from an upper story while he reads a secret message about the vendetta. He looks up at her with an angry grimace as he hides the letter behind his back, the paper trailing onto the floor below, unaware that one of Lord Moronao's spies is hiding beneath the floorboards. At left, an ornately pierced lantern hang from a pine tree, Okaru smiling down with the window above. Nice expressive figures in an attractive setting.
