A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Maruyama-Shijo School Surimono - Interesting Meiji era surimono by an artist from the Maruyama-Shijo School in Kyoto. The school's style combined the direct observation and realism of Western artists with traditional Japanese painting techniques. Surimono are a subcategory of Japanese woodblock prints, usually commissioned by poetry clubs for distribution to their members, most often as New Year's greetings. These attractively colored prints combine poems along with nature scenes, figures, still-lifes, or auspicious objects associated with the holiday. A charming Meiji era example of a traditional Japanese woodblock form.
