Fuwa Banzaemon and the Courtesan Katsuragi, 1863 by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Fuwa Banzaemon and the Courtesan Katsuragi, 1863

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych showing the evil samurai Fuwa Banzaemon crouching beside the courtesan Katsuragi, his arms outstretched as she prepares to pour a dipper of water over them to wash them. She looks down at him fondly, a packet of tissues caught between her teeth as she walks over to a stone basin of water in the garden, a dipper in hand. At left, a frowning young man climbs through the garden fence, the sleeves of his blue cotton kimono tied back with heavy rope. Inside the house a folding screen hides the sleeping area, and a lamp stands on the floor at right. Wonderful detail in the setting, with cherry blossoms framing the dark night sky. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon, Sawamura Tanosuke III, and Nakamura Shikan. An intriguing subject with fine embossed detail in the white kimono collar.
