Comments - Lively battle scene from the Ishiyama Honganji War, a ten-year campaign by Oda Nobunaga against the Ikko-ikki, a group of warrior monks. The Ishiyama Honganji was the fortress and headquarters of the Ikko-ikki just outside Osaka. Here, the monks fire guns from the verandah of the building at upper right as the battle continues below. They also man a cannon on the hillside, sending a shot across the battlefield. Shots streak across the landscape as men fight with swords and spears on the flat plain in the foreground, while smoke and flames pour from a burning templet building at left.
