Man with a Dog and Beauty with a Torch, 1878

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a confrontation taking place at night. At right, a smiling beauty holds a flaming torch, turning her head away as the fellow in the center thrusts his sword at the man standing behind her. He deftly blocks the blow with a sharpened bamboo pole, grimacing angrily. At left, a bearded man wearing a flat cap cradles a dog under his armor, paying now attention to the fighting. Just below him, an old man with birds and a rabbit hanging from a yoke over his shoulder glares up at him. All the men have short cropped hair in the latest Meiji fashion, and two of them wear white button front shirts beneath their robe. The man at right has a knitted muffler. An unusual and intriguing subject, beautifully detailed with a burnished fur pattern on the black cape in the center and a burnished checked pattern on the beauty's black kimono.
