Sarusawa Pond, Nara, 1934 by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949)

Original Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sarusawa Pond, Nara, 1934

Tsuchiya Koitsu - After moving to Tokyo at age fifteen, Koitsu studied for many years with the woodblock artist Kobayashi Kiyochika. Known for his beautiful landscape prints with a dramatic use of light and shade, Koitsu was one of the leaders of the shin-hanga or new print movement in 20th century Japan.

Comments - Lovely winter scene of a beauty walking along the shore of Sarusawa Pond in Nara, snow gently falling through the blue gray sky. The graceful branches of a snow-covered willow tree frame the scene, with a view of the pagoda in gray silhouette in the distance. A beautiful, peaceful image, the composition wonderfully suited to the vertical format.

Artist - Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949)
