Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita - After studying Western style painting in Japan, painter and printmaker Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita moved to Paris in his mid-twenties. His work was an instant success, and he became friends with the top modern artists in France at the time, including Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani. His first one-man show at the Georges Cheron Gallery of 110 paintings sold out the first day. A colorful, larger than life figure, Foujita is considered one of the most important Japanese artists of the 20th century. After returning to Japan in the 1930s, he designed a small number of woodblock portraits. Following WWII, he moved to France permanently, becoming a French citizen. His portraits of beautiful women combine elements of Japanese and Western painting, with delicate curving line work characteristic of traditional Japanese ink paintings. Prints by Foujita are rarely seen on the market and are a great choice for a collector interested in modern Japanese art.
