Kaga and Noto Provinces, 1852 by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kaga and Noto Provinces, 1852

Series; Modern Style Set of the Provinces in Edo Brocade, 1852

Kaga and Noto Provinces, 1852 - Handsome woodblock pairing kabuki scenes with two provinces. The top image for Kaga Province shows the beauty Chiyo-jo carrying a bucket to a well with morning glories growing on a brushwood fence. She wears an interesting white kimono patterned with gray spider webs and large blue dragonflies and insects. The scene below for Noto Province features Matsumoto Koshiro V in bold kumadori makeup as the warrior Noto-no-kami Noritsune. He grips a pole arm as he stares over his shoulder with a grim frown, his bush hair and flared sideburns adding to his fierce appearance. A great design from this series, with fine line work in the hair and soft bokashi shading, and a burnished geometric pattern on the black robe at bottom.
