Comments - Great five-panel print depicting a battle between Meiji Imperial forces and samurai loyal to the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Boshin or Todai Wars of 1868 - 1869. The Shogitai, the Shogun's elite shock infantry troops, battle samurai allied with the Imperial Court, fighting on foot with swords and spears. In the center panel at bottom, a severed head lies on the battlefield as a wounded samurai falls nearby. In the second panel from the left, a warrior flings an enemy high above his head with one hand while grabbing the spear of another attacker. At far right, a general on horseback directs his men with a tasseled baton, rows of soldiers in black uniforms carrying guns behind him. A dramatic scene under a driving rain, with flames and smoke pouring into the night sky from structures in the distance.
