Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Musume Hyoban Zen'aku Kagami, 1865

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Musume Hyoban Zen'aku Kagami" featuring from right Bando Hikosaburo V as Manoya Tokubei, Onoe Kikujiro II as Tokubei's Wife Otoki, Ichimura Kakitsu IV as Subashiri Okuma, Nakamura Tsuruzo I as Yamaneko Osan, and Arashi Kangoro I as Doguya Goichi. Tokubei looks over his shoulder at his wife with an angry sneer, a folding fan in his hand. She watches Goichi at left, who scratches his head as he glares down at the elderly Osan. At bottom center, Okuma stares up at Tokubei, her sleeve pushed up to reveal a black armband. She looks a bit disheveled, with loose hair framing her face and a comb slipping from her hair. The setting is inside a store, with ledgers hanging from the wall at upper left and patterned curtains hanging in the doorway. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.
