Comments - Incredible Yoshitoshi triptych of the famous Battle of Yashima in 1184 between Taira and Minamoto forces. Yoshitsune, the leader of the Minamoto forces, tricked the Taira into abandoning their fortress, defeating them during the ensuing naval battle. In this dramatic scene, Yoshitsune discovers the emperor's mistress, Lady Kenrei, cowering in the palace. She hides behind her robe as the sea winds send her tissues flying and set the lantern and hanging blind swaying overhead. The heroic Yoshitsune spares her life, sending her to a convent. The battle rages on the water behind with arrows flying and warriors fighting across the boats with spears, orange smoke rising from the fire baskets hanging over the waves. A terrific composition with the diagonal of the verandah adding energy and movement, the effect heightened by the deep colors. A dynamic design, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black lacquer railings and armor, and metallic silver pigment on the beauty's kimono and Yoshitsune's helmet.
