Yoritomo’s Battle at Hiraizumi in Mutsu Province: The Attack by Water, 1851 - 1852

Comments - Dramatic image illustration of Minamoto no Yoritomo's men being swept away by a flood as they attack during the Battle of Hiraizumi in Mutsu Province. His troops seek refuge on the thatched rooftops of houses, a pine tree at right, and atop floating debris as the water rushes across the landscape. At bottom center, the warrior Wada Yoshimori clings to the end of an overturned boat. At upper right, two samurai are pieced by the enemy's arrows, one tumbling backwards over his fallen compatriot, while other men hide behind a large wooden shield. A fantastic image with wonderful detail and a bold composition.
