Scene from Satomi Hakkenden, 1852 by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Satomi Hakkenden, 1852

Comments - Great depiction of the famous battle atop the roof of Horyukaku Temple from the kabuki play "Satomi Hakkenden," a drama based on the epic novel "The Biography of Nanso Satomi and the Eight Dog Heroes" (Nanso Satomi Hakkenden). At right, Inuzuka Shino raises an iron truncheon high as he balances atop the roof, leaning down with one hand to steady himself. His young opponent Inukai Genpachi holds up one foot with his hand while brandishing a sword. At top, figurines of a tiger and dragon decorate the ridge of the roof. From left, the actors are Seki Sanjuro and Bando Shuka. A lively image from this classic drama, wonderfully detailed.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 19 3/8"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Two separate panels. Paper remnants on reverse at edges from previous backing. Small loss at thinning at edge, a few wormholes, repaired. Slight creasing. Please see photos for details.
