Hunter with Eagle by Kiyochika (1847 - 1915)

Kiyochika (1847 - 1915) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Hunter with Eagle

Comments - Fantastic, dramatic scene of an eagle on a branch of a tree watching as a fox falls through the air above the rapids of a river, water rushing around large stones. A hunter peers around the corner of the trunk at right, a small bird in flight below. Interestingly, the print is designed to copy the look of imported etchings that were popular during the Meiji era, with detailed line work recreating the appearance of an engraving. A striking and unusual design. Published by Daimaru, this single panel woodblock reprint is based on a diptych by Kiyochika. It comes with a title slip with the publisher's name and the name Osaka Prefectural Old Book Commercial Cooperative, which may have commissioned, sold, or distributed the print, but we could not learn anything more about the group. A great design.
