The Beginning: Tokiwa Gozen Wanders with Her Three Children, circa 1832 - 1834 - Terrific scene of Lady Tokiwa and her three children fleeing through the snow during the Heiji Rebellion. The mother of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, she leads one of her sons by the hand as the other follows along, holding his sleeve to his mouth to warm his hand. A baby is tucked inside her kimono at her chest. Snow-covered bamboo bends over the pathway along a narrow rushing stream, with a lake at left and snow falling through the dark sky. A thatched roof farmhouse can be seen at upper right. A lovely winter scene, nicely detailed. An extremely rare Hiroshige design and only the second time we've seen a print from this series.
