Original Noel Nouet (1885 - 1969) Japanese Woodblock Print
Benkei Moat, 1936

Series; Scenes of Tokyo

Noel Nouet - Noel Nouet was a French artist and poet who spent much of his life in Japan, initially working as a French teacher. He is known for his beautiful and intricately detailed views of famous places in Tokyo, originally drawn in pen and ink. Translating these scenes into woodblock prints required the work of master carvers painstakingly recreating each line. These lovely shin-hanga designs have a freshness capturing the lively quality of the original drawing, enhanced with soft color.

Benkei Moat, 1936 - Serene view of Benkei Moat in Tokyo, the former outer moat of Edo Castle. The calm water winds back toward the line of tall buildings on the horizon, framed by grassy slopes dotted with shrubs. Beautiful fine line work with soft shading on the water and sky.

This presentation - This print comes in a handsome presentation format as originally issued by the publisher. The print is loose within a windowed paper mat that slides into an outer gray folder with the artist's name and series in metallic gold, accompanied by a page of commentary in Japanese. We rarely see these woodblocks come with the original folders. A nice choice for a collector.
