Scene from Miyakodori nagare no shiranami, 1854

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play Scene from Miyakodori nagare no shiranami" of the courtesan Hanako, who is actually Matsuwaka, between the commoners Otokotachi Nobu no Sota at left and Otokotachi Katsushika Juemon at right. She grins over her shoulder at Juemon as she thrusts a pipe in front of Sota's face. Juemon stares back at her with a worried frown as he grips his cased sword, a tobacco set on the ground near his feet. At left, Sota leans forward with an angry expression, ready to draw his weapon. A border of clouds separates the figures from a view of a river with blossoming cherry trees on the opposite bank, framed by white cherry blossoms overhead. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji IV, Bando Shuka I, and Arashi Rikan III. Nice expressive figures in a lovely landscape setting.
