Original Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Naoe Kanetsugu in Battle, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Great depiction of the warrior Naoe Kanetsugu in a battle along the coast. He charges ahead on a light colored horse in the center, using his spear to knock the rider in front of him from his horse, a fallen samurai trampled beneath its hooves. At lower right, a warrior kneels atop an enemy with a sword to his neck. Fighting continues all around, with waves lapping against the rocky shore at upper left. A fantastic design filled with action and wonderful detail in the armor and weapons. The first time we've seen this striking musha-e triptych.
