Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Council of the Loyal Retainers, 1851 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic depiction of the 47 ronin holding a council in Lord Hangan's palace to determine a course of action to avenge their master's death. At upper left, the leader of the ronin, Oboshi Yuranosuke, kneels in front of a standing screen decorated with crashing waves, a stern expression on his face. An elderly samurai sits beside him, his mouth open as he speaks. The other warriors are gathered around the edge of the room, and more men continue to arrive, waiting outside the wall of the courtyard to enter the gate. At lower, right bearers carry a samurai in a palanquin, while at upper right, another palanquin arrives, its bearers running along the road where townspeople stand to watch. A dynamic composition with an interesting viewpoint, nicely detailed.
